UCLA Edges UC San Diego in Five Games

Bruins advance to the MPSF playoffs as the No.2 seed.

April 15, 2005

Final Stats

The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team avoided a shocking upset to unranked UC San Diego Friday night, winning in five games on the Tritons' home court.

The Bruins won 26-30, 30-23, 35-37, 30-20, 18-16 in more than two hours at UCSD's Rimac Arena. The victory raised the Bruins' overall record to 25-4, 18-4 in league play. The Tritons ended their season with a 2-24 record, 1-21 in MPSF play.

Another poor night at the service line nearly led to the Bruins' demise. UCLA committed 24 services errors, despite hitting .392 and out-blocking the Tritons, 15.0-8.0.

Senior Paul Johnson led the Bruins with 24 kills (.639), followed by sophomore Matt McKinney who recorded his first career double-double: 18 kills (.406) and 13 digs. Freshman Libero Tony Ker recorded 12 digs and setter Dennis Gonzalez added 10.

Luke Harnett led UCSD with 15 kills.

The Bruins advance to the MPSF playoffs and will host a quarterfinal match on Sat., Apr. 23 at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. The opponent will be determined after the league play-in match between the MPSF's seventh and eighth seeded teams on Apr. 20.
