UCLA Upset by The Beach

The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team dropped a four-game decision on the road to Long Beach State Thursday night.

The 49ers won 30-27, 24-30, 31-29, 31-29 in two hours and 10 minutes in front of 1,886 fans at The Pyramid. The Bruins fell to 24-4 overall and 17-4 in league play. Long Beach State improved to 19-9, 13-8. With the loss, Pepperdine clinched the top seed in the MPSF playoffs. The Bruins will be the No.2 seed and host a quarterfinal match on Apr. 23.

Despite out-hitting and out-blocking the 49ers, the Bruins gave away 17 points at the service line, and served just two aces. UCLA converted 32 percent of its attacks, while limiting The Beach to 25 percent. The Bruins also recorded 13 total blocks to the 49ers' 12.

Sophomore Matt McKinney was the Bruins' kill leader with 18 (.324). Senior Paul Johnson added 16 kills (.609) and nine total blocks. Tony Ker led UCLA with 13 digs.

Robert Tarr led The Beach with 28 kills and 10 digs, followed by 19 kills from Yasir Sliti.

The Bruins will end their season on Friday, Apr. 15 on the road against UC San Diego.
