Three Former Bruins Qualify for U.S. Open

Conway, Vallely and McCarron miss the cut.

Three former UCLA golfers qualified Monday for the 104th U.S. Open, June 17-20 at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, NY.

Parker McLachlin and current PGA TOUR professionals Duffy Waldorf and Tom Pernice Jr., each qualified at sectional sites.

McLachlin, who has won twice professionally this year on the Hooters Tour and the A.G. Spanos California Tour, won the sectional qualifying event in his home state of Hawaii by posting rounds of 71-74-145 at Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, HI. McLachlin was the only player out of 11 to earn a berth into next week's national championship tournament.

Former UCLA volleyball setter Eric Vallely did not make the cut at Turtle Bay after rounds of 80-86-166 in windy, wet weather.

"I played great in practice rounds, but I couldn't find a rhythm [on Monday]," said Vallely.

In Columbus, OH at Brookside Golf and Country Club, PGA TOUR veterans Duffy Waldorf and Tom Pernice Jr., both former UCLA All-Americans, were two of 184 golfers earning 33 spots into the U.S. Open. Waldorf fired rounds of 64-68-132 to finish second, and Pernice posted scores of 67-67-134 and tied for fourth place.

At the same site, UCLA alumnus and TOUR veteran Scott McCarron did not turn in a second round card after a first round 70.

At Lake Merced in Daly City, UCLA senior Steve Conway failed to qualify.
